Jalousie Windows in Hawaii: Repair, Replace or Upgrade?

Jalousie windows are as Hawaii as rice cookers and rubber slippers — and for good reason. The usual suspects

Loose or rattling louvers usually mean tired clips (the small metal holders at each end), which corrode in salt air and are cheap to replace. Cracked or missing louvers are the easiest fix of all: glass shops cut replacements to size same-day.

Frames rusted beyond service, or a desire for security and hurricane-rated glass, are the other main reasons to replace.

A middle path

Plenty of Oahu homes do both: keep jalousies where the breeze does the cooling, replace them in the one or two rooms with AC. It preserves what makes island homes comfortable while fixing the real problem rooms.
